Incident: Unlawful Intercourse & Several Other Sex Crimes With a Minor
Report #: 12-011145
Date: Friday, 2/3/2012

This past December, the Salinas Police Department received a report of child sexual abuse of a fourteen year old girl. Investigation revealed the victim accepted the eighteen year old suspect's friend request on Facebook even though she did not know him. The following day, the suspect went to the victim's house and committed several sex crimes against her. This happened a few more times over the next several days. He also managed to convince the victim to give him some of her mother's jewelry and cash. The suspect, Heriberto (Eddy) Ruiz Martinez, was ultimately identified through his Facebook account information. He was arrested on today's date and booked into the Monterey County Jail for a variety of sex-related crimes. Parents are strongly encouraged to monitor their children's Facebook and other online activities. This case is a good example of how easy it is for someone to be the victim of a sex crime when social media is misused. Also, it is unknown at this time if Martinez sexually assaulted anyone else. If anyone has information on any more possible victims, they are encouraged to contact the Salinas Police Department at 758-7321 and initiate a report.
